Getting around

Transportation

Istanbul is two continents stitched together by ferries, bridges and a very good metro. Here's how to move through it gracefully.

Trains & metro

Istanbulkart

Buy an Istanbulkart at any metro station (about ₺130 including the card) and tap it on the metro, tram, funicular and ferries. The tram along the historic peninsula is the fastest way between the old sights.

On the water

Ferries

The ferries are the joy of the city — a commuter ride across to Kadıköy or up the Bosphorus to Ortaköy costs the same as a metro ticket and doubles as the best sightseeing cruise in the world.

Door to door

Taxis & ride apps

Official yellow taxis are plentiful; insist on the meter. The BiTaksi app works like a local Uber. Uber itself only connects to official taxis here. Rides within the center usually run ₺150–350.

Practicalities

A few good things to know

Visas

Check before you fly

Many nationalities enter visa-free for up to 90 days; others apply online through the official e-Visa site (evisa.gov.tr) in minutes. Check your passport's requirements when you book your flight.

Money

The Turkish lira

Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including street vendors. Keep a little cash for bazaars and tips. Tipping is warm but not rigid: round up taxi fares, and 10% is appreciated at restaurants.

Weather

May sunshine

Late-summer warmth: days around 25–28°C, evenings cooling to a gentle 17–19°C. Bring sunglasses and a light wrap for the waterfront ceremony after sunset.

Connectivity

SIMs & eSIMs

Airport kiosks sell tourist SIM cards; eSIM options like Airalo or Saily activate before you even land. Hotel Wi-Fi is reliable everywhere we've listed.
